I know the Superbowl is over, but as I watched my wife’s Chiefs come back against a dominant 49ers defense I got to thinking.

There’s an old saying in sports that says, “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships.”

Another version of that quote -I’m not sure which came first – is:

“Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.” ~Bear Bryant

I feel like this is so true in health, fitness and weight loss.

Think about it:

The latest, greatest, coolest fitness gizmo, workout program, fad diet, or new franchise in town can sell a lot of “tickets.”

They’re exciting.They’re sexy.They scream opportunity and HOPE to the buyer.

Even proven, purpose-driven, intentional program designs can be categorized as “offense.”For many, that’s the FUN part – a great workout is “play time.”

HOWEVER, if you’ve ever tried working out 5,6 even 7 days per week only to be less than thrilled, disappointed, even ticked off with your results, you’ve experienced what I’m talking about.

The problem is you were lacking DEFENSE.

Defense, in this case, is all the other stuff you do the 23 hours in the day you’re not having fun in the gym.

Defense = Supportive Nutrition

Defense = Stress Management

Defense = Supplementation

Defense = Sleep

Defense isn’t sexy.

Defense doesn’t market well.

Defense isn’t fun.

Yet, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Yes, you have to have a great offense – a sound workout program that you enjoy and attend consistently. But, without a solid defense it’s like trying to fill water into a bucket that’s full of holes…
